School-based Primary Literacy Programme
Overview
For the 2024 – 2025 school year, our school will continue to implement the school-based Primary Literacy Programme. To enhance our programme, learners will participate in tasks that reflect the integration of all four of the language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Teachers will use a variety of teaching strategies and activities to help students learn these skills in a focused and fun way.
School-based Phonics, High Frequency Words (HFW) and Curriculum in English
In the previous years, we have implemented a school-based phonics programme. The programme has been revised to focus on the blending of phonics sounds. A school-based phonics website along with the workbooks will be used to promote e-learning as well as self-directed learning. The programme will continue to foster a solid foundation in Key Stage One with the use of our school-based phonics booklets.
In addition, students in Key Stage One will learn high frequency words through games. Through the use of games, students will be encouraged to form study groups or to study by themselves. Opportunities to read aloud the words will be provided as well.
To support these programmes, a variety of techniques will be used during English NET and LET lessons. Some of these strategies include incorporating phonics and high frequency words games and activities in and outside of class, using e-Books for shared reading to focus on developing reading strategies and decoding skills, reading aloud, story-telling and role-playing. In addition, as writing is another main concern of the curriculum, process writing will be introduced together with the teaching of writing strategies.
E-learning will also be emphasised for both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two classes. E-homework will be delivered via Google Classroom for students of all levels. Popular e-learning platforms such as Padlet, Quizlet, Kahoot! and Quizizz, will also be used to stimulate students’ interest in learning English. The application of computer literacy skills in English classes will likely encourage and assist students in self-directed learning.
To cultivate students’ reading habits and promote lifelong learning, our students will be exposed to a language-rich environment. We will encourage students to read every day not just for learning, but also for leisure and enjoyment.
